Negative Effects of Nationalism

By definition, nationalism is pride in ones country, but in a deeper sense, nationalism is more than just pride, it is a metaphor for life in ones country. Nationalism displays the raw nature and pride that individuals have in their country, but when nationalism erupts in international sporting competitions, negative effects evolve over time.

At first glance nationalism is mainly a positive characteristic, due to the facts that show individuals begin to have pride in ones country, however looking deeper into the issue of nationalism, one can see its negative issues, which are defiantly worth discussing. In the Bloggingheads video about sports and how it is not a metaphor for a nation, I believe that these ideas are created based off of nationalism and what these prideful fans want to believe, but eventually create negative effects, due to the simple fact that not every country can be victorious.

International sporting events, such as the Olympics and the World Cup, seem to thrive off of pride and nationalism. This brings up the following questions, what is the mere appearance of the Olympics and what is the deeper and more significant meaning behind it? Which people receive the positive and negative effects of nationalism? The truth is that every International sporting event would be nothing without nationalism, which includes the negative effects that come along with it.

When first observed, the Olympics are an international sporting event, which approximately 75 to 100 countries participate in. When looking deeper into the Olympics, you start to see that each one of those countries are supported by millions of nationalistic fans, that want nothing more than to be extremely passionate, supportive, and prideful toward their home nation. The truth of the matter is that most of these prideful individuals, get extremely irritated when their countries do not perform well, which could eventually lead to riots in the home countries, depression among individuals from a losing country, and cause hatred and anger between two divided countries. Eventually, these negative effects build up and begin to truly show they negative effects of nationalism and how it can affect every individual involved.

When looking at the big picture of nationalism, there is a clear division among people who receive the positive effects of nationalism, and those who receive the negative effects of it. The people who receive the positive effects are in fact the government and politicians. These individuals receive the glory of being recognized as a powerful nation if there country performs well in these international sporting competitions. If the teams perform poorly, then these government officials can blame it practically on anything that they want to.

For instance, an article from CNN, describes how Russian President Dmitry Medvedev fired several Olympic officials that represented Russia, after the worst performance by the country in the Winter Olympics in approximately 100 years. This demonstrates the power that these individuals have, and how they have the capability to make changes, just so long as the citizens do not believe that it is their fault for the country not to perform well.

The individuals who receive the negative effects of nationalism are the citizens, the ones who support their countries. They want nothing more than their country to be proudly and rightfully recognized. However, they receive all the negative effects of nationalism, which could include, depression and hurt, all due to the fact that these individuals want to support their country.

Pride and Nationalism are both key factors in the world of sports. These countries would not be able to compete without fans and individuals to support them. However, the side effects of nationalism are to be noted. The negative effects include severe depression in some instances and can also lead to arguments and riots amongst rivaling countries, which could in all honestly could be a major cause of a war. These international sporting competitions cause nationalism, and its side effects to increase, which I believe creates more negative than positive effects on individuals and their countries.

  1. Good attempt to try to define nationalism beyond the obvious.

negative effects evolve over time." bit vague, but hoping essay will make it clearer.

"one can see its negative issues, which are defiantly worth discussing" vague as well. I want to know what negative issues. And you use the word "negative" once more in this paragraph and yet a fourth time in the next paragraph and still resist getting specific. Next time, try cutting all uses of the word negative and just start NAMING from the beginning the nature and identity of these effects.

The purpose of these topic questions -- "what is the deeper and more significant meaning behind it? Which people receive the positive and negative effects of nationalism?" -- is not so you can drop them into the paper, but so you can come up with the answers and use the answers in the paper. These are interesting questions and I'd like to know the answer.

Fifth and sixth: Eventually, these negative effects build up and begin to truly show they negative effects of nationalism and how it can affect every individual involved." But I still don't understand the negative effects.

"When looking at the big picture of nationalism, there is a clear division among people who receive the positive effects of nationalism, and those who receive the negative effects of it." Good.

Cut conclusion. It doesn't add anything beyond what you've said.
